Law

Led the Working Group responsible for evaluating The Salvation Army’s privacy and information sharing practices, consulting with internal stakeholder groups and developing privacy and access policies across national and regional head offices, as well as frontline service delivery agencies

Took a lead role on The Salvation Army’s Legal Restructuring Task Force by providing strategic legal advice and preparing “modernized” by-laws for an organization created by Special Act of Parliament in 1909

Engaged as junior legal counsel in the preparation of applications for leave to intervene, and in the research and preparation of legal arguments and facta in Charter litigation in the Supreme Court of Canada (M. v. H. and  Winnipeg Child and Family Services (Northwest Area) v. D. (F.G.)) and the Ontario Court of Appeal (Attorney General (Canada) v. Rosenberg)

Academic

Partial completion of a Master of Arts in Political Science, with particular emphasis on Canadian politics and the accommodation of religious and ethnic/national (i.e. aboriginal) minorities

Ongoing review and analysis of key court and tribunal decisions affecting religious and other minorities in the fields of administrative law, human rights and constitutional law

Public Policy

Actively engaged with the Office of the Minister of Health in the establishment of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and the development of the Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative (a $139 million initiative undertaken in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and the Government of Canada’s National Anti-Drug Strategy

Played a lead role in the development of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act, and amendments to the Tobacco Act and the Food and Drugs Act

Lead the team of advisors to the Minister of Health concerning the management of the 2008 Listeriosis outbreak, the 2009 H1N1 outbreak and the 2009 medical isotopes shortage
